DESIGN BASICS

Take control of home organization with freedomRail! These design tips will help you create a hard-working, beautiful storage solution in any room of your home.

Getting started. Before you begin designing your freedomRail closet, ask yourself these questions:

  • What percentage of my wardrobe is long-hang? Short-hang?
  • How much of the closet do you want to devote to folded items, shoes, belts, ties, boxes, or luggage?
  • What percentage of my wardrobe do I wear a lot?
  • Take these percentages into account as you plan your space.

Use the 50/25/25 rule-of-thumb for any closet -- 50% double hang, 25% single hang, 25% shelving. Closets with more double hang maximize space.

Think wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling. The Hanging Rail and Uprights are key to maximum adjustability. You will have the greatest number of future options if you extend your Rail wall-to-wall and use the longest Uprights possible.

Design in short lengths with O-boxes at varying heights. Rather than the old style of wall-to-wall shelving, think in terms of shorter sections that allow for easier reconfiguration. For example, across the top of your closet, consider using a 4' shelf, an O-Box, and a 2' shelf instead of an 8' shelf. This enhances your ability to adjust your space any time your needs change.

Design in compartments rather than spans. Rather than 8' of double hang, refine those measurements to different categories of double hang, such as 2' of casual shirts, 2' of dress shirts, 2' of skirts, 2' of pants. These smaller sections help maintain a sense of visual organization. A great way to create a "compartment" is to mount shelves between two O-Boxes. The O-Boxes create "sides" and help to form closed compartments that work well for stacked and folded clothes.

Open up your corners. For maximum accessibility of corners in an L-shaped or Walk-In closet, plan for hanging garments to intersect with shallow shelves or O-Boxes.

Triple Hang for children. Triple hang is the perfect solution for a child’s closet. Mount shelves at 28", 56", and 84" from the floor. freedomRail components can be easily adjusted as your child grows. For example, a pre-teen may use shelving at 32", 64", and a storage shelf at 84" from the floor providing two short hanging areas and added storage above. Children’s closets should include a large percentage of shelving for folded clothes, games, toys, and books.

Mounting Height Tips

  • Mount the Rail at 84" and run wall-to-wall for the greatest storage capacity, adjustability, and versatility.
  • For "extra tall" (over 6’ 2") wardrobes, mount the Rail at 86". Use 78" Uprights in this application.
  • With 8-foot ceilings, push Rails to the ceiling to simplify installation and maximize use of vertical space. Use 78" or 90" Uprights for this application.

widths of rails

  • To achieve wall-to-wall installation, combine different size Rails or cut Rails to fit.
  • Subtract 1" from wall-to-wall measurement to allow for wall variation.

upright know-how

  • 78" Uprights provide the greatest storage capacity, adjustability, and future expansion possibilities. These Uprights also provide more options for "extra tall" (over 6’ 2") or "petite" wardrobes.
  • 30" Uprights allow for a short stack of shelves or Long Hang.
  • 48" Uprights allow for two rows of Short Hang.
  • 90" Uprights can be used in high ceiling applications for maximum flexibility.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Bi-Fold Doors
Bi-Fold Doors are typically found in closets and pantries. Bi-fold Doors are two doors or four doors hung on a track. The doors “fold out” in a V-formation as they slide along the track.

Bypass Doors
Bypass Doors slide past each other, leaving the center of the closet somewhat difficult to access. If you have bypass doors, avoid positioning O-Boxes or Stor-Drawers in the center of your design. A section of long hang in the center is preferable.

Double Hang (also called Short Hang)
Short hang can be used in any closet to maximize space. Short hang includes two shelves and chrome rods hanging in a row vertically. Short hang is ideal for shirts, folded pants, and suits. Typically, 50% of your closet should be short hang.

Headers
The wall space above the door frame.

Long Hang (also called Single Hang)
Long hang is one shelf and chrome rod hanging vertically. Use Long Hang for dresses, coats and longer clothing. In general, 25% of your closet space should be dedicated to Long Hang.

Pocket Doors
Pocket Doors slide into built-in "pockets" in the walls. Pocket doors come in pairs, with one door panel sliding to the right and the other sliding to the left.

Reach-In
A Reach-In closet is generally 24" deep, accommodates one row of shelving, and has sliding or bi-fold doors. To design a Reach-In closet solution, measure the width, depth, height, height of header, and width of return walls. See Inspiration Gallery for ideas.

Return Walls
The shorter walls on either side of the door.

Short Hang (also called Double Hang)
Short hang can be used in any closet to maximize space. Short hang includes two shelves and chrome rods hanging in a row vertically. Short hang is ideal for shirts, folded pants, and suits.

Single Hang (also called Long Hang)
Long hang is one shelf and chrome rod hanging vertically. Use Long Hang for dresses, coats and longer clothing. In general, 25% of your closet space should be dedicated to Long Hang.

Triple Hang
Triple Hang is typically used in a child’s closet and includes three shelves and chrome rods hanging in a row vertically. Triple hang maximizes space for small-sized clothing and is generally not recommended in a closet for an adult.

Walk-In
A Walk-in Closet has enough depth to allow you to "walk inside." A variety of door styles are used. Walk-in Closets give you more design freedom. See Inspiration Gallery for ideas.
